It works with mice and pointing devices that provide standard pointer, button, and wheel events. Basic left, right, middle, and common side buttons are the most likely to appear. A device can expose extra buttons as keyboard shortcuts, macros, media actions, or proprietary controls that the test does not receive as mouse buttons. Wireless mode, remote sessions, accessibility software, and operating system remapping can also change the visible events. Verify unusual controls in the manufacturer's configuration utility or their target application.
A double-click test helps detect whether two click events are reported within the configured double-click interval. An intentional double-click should register as two deliberate presses, while a worn switch can sometimes produce two events from one physical press, often called chatter. Test slowly with single clicks first, then intentional double-clicks, and repeat enough times to reveal intermittent behavior. Also check operating system double-click speed and compare with another port or machine before concluding that the switch is defective.
CPS means clicks per second. It divides the number of registered clicks by the active test duration and is mainly useful for comparing repeated runs under the same conditions. CPS is influenced by technique, button resistance, debounce behavior, test length, fatigue, and whether every event is registered. It is not a direct measurement of pointer accuracy, end-to-end latency, or overall mouse quality. Avoid aggressive clicking that causes strain or damages the switch, and prioritize controlled, repeatable input over a single peak score.
Back and forward buttons may be remapped to keyboard shortcuts, macros, media commands, or disabled actions, so they may not arrive as standard mouse button events. Navigation can also occur before a page records the signal unless the action stays inside the test area. Check the mouse software and operating system mapping, focus the test surface, and try the control in another application. If the button fails everywhere, test another connection or machine before treating the result as a hardware failure.
A touchpad can be checked for pointer movement, primary click, secondary click, tap, and scrolling when those gestures are exposed as standard events. Multi-finger gestures, pressure, palm rejection, haptics, and manufacturer-specific actions may not appear. Test physical press and tap behavior separately, then compare with operating system touchpad settings. If movement jumps or gestures fail, clean the surface, remove moisture, disable conflicting accessibility options, and try another application before assuming the touchpad hardware is damaged.
First confirm that one deliberate physical press produces two registered events repeatedly. Lower or raise the operating system double-click threshold to rule out an unsuitable setting, then clean around the button, check battery or cable stability, disable macros, and test another port or machine. If the duplicate events continue across environments, the switch may be worn and may require repair or replacement. Avoid software filters that merely hide repeated events when reliable clicking is important, because they can also suppress valid rapid input.
Check every button, both wheel directions, middle click, pointer movement, click-and-hold dragging, intentional double-clicks, and repeated slow single clicks. Look for missing events, duplicates, reversed scrolling, releases that occur while the button is still held, or movement when the mouse is stationary. Repeat the same sequence using a stable surface and connection. A polling-rate estimate can vary with motion and system load, so compare several runs and do not treat one reported peak as the complete performance of the device.
