What should I check before using the result?

Compare the exported image with the source at the size where it will actually be used, not only in a small preview. Check pixel dimensions, output format, file size, sharp edges, gradients, fine texture, small text, and transparency. For target-size compression, confirm that the visual result is still acceptable after any quality or dimension reduction needed to reach the limit. For crop and resize work, inspect the subject position and aspect ratio. A smaller file is only useful when the details required by the destination remain readable and recognizable.

Does exporting remove metadata?

Yes. Exported images are rebuilt from their visible pixels, so EXIF and GPS fields are not copied into the finished file. This can remove common camera details such as capture time, coordinates, device model, and orientation metadata. It does not remove information that is visibly present inside the pixels, such as a name on a badge, an address in a screenshot, a reflection, or a location sign. Review the visible image separately before sharing it, and remember that the downloaded filename can also reveal information if you keep a descriptive source name.

Why can dimensions change when I set a file-size target?

A strict file-size target may require more than lowering encoding quality. Detailed photos, noise, gradients, and large pixel dimensions contain more visual information and can remain above the selected limit even at low quality. When quality reduction alone is insufficient, the optimizer can reduce pixel dimensions until the result fits. This tradeoff makes the file smaller but also reduces the detail available for zooming, large displays, or print. Check the final dimensions and inspect small text, faces, product edges, and diagrams before using a heavily reduced result.

Which output format should I choose?

Use JPG for photographs when transparency is not needed and broad compatibility matters. Use PNG for logos, interface graphics, screenshots, sharp text, or images that require transparency, while noting that detailed photographs can produce large PNG files. Use WebP when you want a modern balance of visual quality and file size for common digital use. Keeping the original format avoids an unnecessary format change. Format choice and compression are separate decisions, so compare both visual quality and size instead of assuming one format is always smallest or best.

Why should I compare the image at its intended display size?

Compression artifacts, softened text, lost fine detail, halos around edges, and color banding can be difficult to notice in a small preview. An image that looks acceptable as a thumbnail may look poor when opened full size, placed on a high-density screen, cropped again, or printed. Check the export at the approximate final display size and, for important assets, test it in the actual destination. Compare the source and output side by side, then choose the smallest file that still preserves the details the viewer needs.
